Spode Copeland 2 Dessert Plates 6 1/2" Hand Painted India Tree 1955 Rust Green A beautiful COPELAND SPODE Set of 2 DESSERT/BREAD & BUTTER PLATES, HAND PAINTED Striking RUST RED & GREEN India (INDIAN) Tree pattern with
TREE, FLOWER SPRAYS & BUTTER FLY on Bone, Circa 1955 from Staffordshire, England DESCRIPTION:
This vintage hand painted chinaware has colors that are bright and vivid. This is
on an earthenware bone blank with rust red trim. The symbolic
Tree of Life from ancient India is displayed in orange, rust red, green and yellow
with a high lacquer finish on a scalloped and fluted mold. These plates have the very unusual silver wash on various parts of the design and this is visible only when turned at the right angle in bright light. This is particularly on the trunk and stems of the branches. It is impossible to photograph. Please check our Pricetronic store for more items in the India Tree pattern. CONDITION:
While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb. Both plates have slight crazing on the back. One plate has a very short rub on the rust red on the rim. See photo #11. Otherwise, we can find no chips, nicks,
rubbings, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be
absolutely no wear to the vivid colors. Look in the photos to see this. All pieces are beautiful and
classically decorated. DIMENSIONS:
The plates have a diameter of 6 1/2" and a height of 3/4". HISTORY/MARKS:
The 37 year old Josiah Spode founded his Spode Pottery Company at
Stoke-on-Trent in 1770 after having worked with many of the best potters
in the Stoke-on-Trent area from the age of 16. He is credited with the
development of a winning formula for making fine bone china and the
perfection of blue under-glaze printing. Three of his original
transferware patterns are still being produced today: Tower Blue,
Willow, and Blue Italian. In 1833, Spode Pottery was sold to William
Taylor Copeland and remained in the Copeland family until 1966. By
1976, the company had become part of the Royal Worcester Spode Group.
Today, it is part of the Portmeirion Group and continues the production
of high quality fine bone china at Stoke-on-Trent. The brown printed
mark on this plate set is identified in Robert Copeland’s Spode & Copeland Marks
as mark #259 used 1920-1957. This set was produced in 1955
as evidenced by the 55 impressed on back of plates. This is very hard to read on these plates, but these were part of a set which had the easily readable 55.
